The Race No Child Should Have to Run: Fighting Childhood Cancer Together

No child should have to spend their days in hospital beds instead of playgrounds. No parent should ever hear the words, “Your child has cancer.” Yet, for thousands of families every year, this nightmare becomes reality. Childhood cancer doesn’t discriminate. It doesn’t wait. It doesn’t care about birthdays, holidays, or the dreams a child has for the future. It comes swiftly, stealing time, health, and far too often, young lives.

Every single day in the United States, 43 children are diagnosed with cancer. That’s nearly 16,000 kids each year who must face a battle they never signed up for. Despite this staggering number, childhood cancer research receives only 4% of federal cancer funding. That means the smallest warriors, the ones with the most fragile futures, are often left fighting an uphill battle with outdated treatments and limited resources.

Dr. Eugenie Kleinerman, a pediatric oncologist at MD Anderson Cancer Center, highlights the urgent need for more research:

“We are still using chemotherapy drugs from the 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s on children. The long-term effects can be devastating, yet without better options, these toxic treatments remain the standard.”

For those who survive, the fight doesn’t end when the cancer is gone. More than 95% of childhood cancer survivors suffer lifelong health complications due to the harsh treatments they endured—heart disease, secondary cancers, infertility, and cognitive issues that make even the simplest daily tasks a struggle. This isn’t just about survival. It’s about ensuring these kids have a future worth living for.

More Than a Diagnosis—They Are Fighters

Every child with cancer has a story. Some are filled with victories, moments of remission, and the overwhelming relief of being cancer-free. Others are stories of unimaginable grief—parents forced to say goodbye far too soon. But through every story, one thing remains constant: these kids are warriors. They fight with more strength, courage, and resilience than most of us will ever know.

That’s why Team Haleybug Racing exists—not just to raise awareness, but to fight alongside these children and families. Inspired by Haley “Haleybug” Chandler’s own battle with cancer, our mission is clear: to bring hope, fund life-changing initiatives, and stand in the gap for kids who need us most.
